‘All sides need to contribute to a compromise’ Borrell tells European Parliament debate on situation in Georgia

March 10, 2021

The European Union looks forward to seeing progress in the urgent dialogue between government and opposition in Georgia, EU High Representative Josep Borrell told a European Parliament debate on the current political situation in Georgia on 9 March.

All sides need to contribute to agreeing to a compromise. We expect the government to provide inclusive leadership, putting the interests of the Georgian people first,” said Borrell. “And all actors need to refrain from provocative actions and rhetoric.” He added that the European Union sees as priorities the consolidation of democracy, including electoral reforms, political stability and an inclusive parliamentary process.

Borrell reminded parliamentarians that Georgia remains a key associated partner of the European Union. The progress of Association Agreement will be assessed by EU on 16 March during the Association Council with the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
